John Edward Thomas (CEO)
For over two decade, John Edward Thomas owned and operated one of the most successful boutique entertainment licensing agencies in the USA, with over $3 billion in revenue. His company represented major corporate brands, Broadway properties, celebrities, and some of the most iconic entertainment brands in the industry.
At age 21, John conceived and authored the international best-selling Kid Concoctions book series. He founded his own publishing company which quickly climbed to the #2 ranked small press in the USA, selling over 6 million books and grossing over $100 million in sales the first few years. The success of the Kid Concoctions brand and book series is attributed to John’s unique brand-building strategy that combined Licensing, Direct Response (infomercial), Electronic Shopping (QVC - including a single day record of 96,000 books sold in 24 hours), Direct to Retail, and PBS national pledge specials together with award-winning PR and marketing campaigns. John also established the Kid Concoctions brand as a major force in the toy/arts & crafts industry by creating over 100 Kid Concoctions products that were manufactured and sold at more than 25,000 major retailers around the globe. In addition, the Kid Concoctions brand spun off into a Time-Life DVD series, 2 major theme park attractions at Dolly Parton’s Dollywood in Pigeon Forge, TN and Silver Dollar City in Branson, MO, as well as over 5 million Chick-fil-A kid’s meals and 50 million Kellogg’s Froot Loops boxes.
As the face of the Kid Concoctions brand, John Thomas produced and created his own national television series of “Kid Concoctions” pledge specials on PBS grossing over $12.5 million dollars in the first year of release becoming the one of the most successful pledge specials in public television history. In addition to PBS, John has made over 300 national television appearances, including: The CBS Early Show, HGTV (6 years), Discovery Channel (4 years), The Today Show, The Howie Mandel Show, Rosie, The Tony Danza Show, Donny & Marie, CNN, TNN, and The View. John also co-hosted "Great Day America," a one-hour live national daily program on PAX TV, broadcast live from Universal Studios in Hollywood.
In 1989, John launched a theatrical production company, producing a series of touring shows including Side by Side by Sondheim, directed and choreographed by Academy Award-nominated film director Rob Marshall. John then made his Broadway debut in 2005 by producing the Tony Award-nominated Broadway musical Little Women the Musical, starring Sutton Foster and Maureen McGovern. Since that time, John has been involved with over two dozen Broadway productions and Broadway tours as producer, investor, and/or licensing agent.
Apart from John’s business record, he is best known as a toy inventor and the man who created the homemade recipe of slime (Gooey Gunk) in 1997, spawning an international phenomenon that continues to this day. Further highlights include John’s multiple Telly Awards, Parents’ Choice Awards, Dr. Toy Awards, Oppenheim Toy Awards, and the Amazon.com Best Seller Award, reaching #6 of all books sold on Amazon.com.
